Department of Industrial and Ecological Chemistry of the State University of Moldova (DIEC, http://www.usm.md/chimie/chimind.html) was created on September 1, 1992 by the initiative of Prof. Gheorghe Duca, Academician, President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The idea to harmonize the problems of the chemical technology development and environment protection requirements was put at the base of Department formation. Currently, DIEC has a complex structure and consists of the Chair of Industrial and Ecological Chemistry, Scientific Research Center of Applied and Ecological Chemistry and a group of NGO's, including, "Terra Nostra", "ChimEco", and UNEP office in Moldova. The developed structure of DIEC is aimed for the education and training of future specialists in the fields of development and implementation of new environmentally friendly technologies for the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, environment quality control and decision making, environment issues public awareness growth. DIEC has actively participated in the organization of all "Ecological Chemistry" conferences held since 1995.
